Fixations may develop from muscular bracing to prevent damage and pain in dysfunctional (overtaxed) spinal levels. This study shows how fixation, in this case from fusion surgery, places increased demands on adjacent segments, leading to their dysfunction, damage, and pain. I argue that this induces bracing at these adjacent areas and eventual progression of subluxated fixations throughout the entire spinal column. As fixations increase overall resilience to mechanical injury diminishes on an exponential scale.
